God Retired?!
Psalm 77
There are seasons when life feels heavy, prayer feels unanswered, and God feels distant. In Psalm 77, Asaph gives honest voice to that struggle crying out in the night, overwhelmed with questions, and wondering if the Lord has somehow stepped back just when he needs Him most.
This message explores the tension many believers feel: we know God is faithful, yet our current circumstances don’t seem to match what we believe. Asaph wrestles with sleeplessness, discouragement, and a flood of “what if” questions Has God forgotten me? Has His love run out? Have His promises failed? But in the middle of his distress, he reaches a turning point: he recognizes that it is human weakness to assume God has changed.
Instead of letting despair define his faith, Asaph chooses a different response he remembers. He recalls God’s past faithfulness, reflects deeply on what God has done, and meditates on His mighty works. As he “lays the wonders of God on the table,” his perspective shifts from panic to praise.
The psalm ultimately points us back to the God who rescues, the God who works wonders, and the God who leads His people like a shepherd even when His footprints can’t be seen. This sermon encourages us to trust that God has not retired, He has not abandoned us, and He is still actively at work especially in the messiest and most uncertain moments of life.
When we can’t trace Him, we can still trust Him
