Backpacks and Purpose

Based on Jeremiah 29:11, this sermon uses the familiar image of a student’s backpack to remind the church that children carry much more than books and school supplies. As a new school year begins, students may also carry expectations, friendships, fears, pressures, disappointments, and uncertainty. Yet just as God reminded His people during a difficult season of exile, He has not forgotten them. He knows them, has a purpose for them, and offers them hope for the future.

The message challenges the entire church to help fill students’ “backpacks” with three important spiritual supplies: prayer, encouragement, and presence. We can pray intentionally for students, teachers, and families; encourage young people so they know they are seen and valued; and follow Jesus’ example by simply showing up and being present in their lives.

Supporting children and families is not only the responsibility of parents. It is a calling shared by the church. We may not be able to remove every challenge students will face, but through prayer, encouragement, and faithful presence, we can remind them that they are loved, they are not alone, and God is with them wherever the new school year takes them.
