The First Thing I Want You to Do…

 1 Timothy 2:1-8 (NLT)

This sermon emphasizes the importance of prayer as the foundation of the Christian life. Paul’s instruction to Timothy is clear: before anything else, believers should pray. Prayer is not merely a religious duty but a vital means of fellowship with God, allowing His presence, power, and purpose to shape our lives.

The message reminds us that God has always desired close communion with His people. From the Garden of Eden to the early church, Scripture reveals a God who longs for relationship with His children. Prayer is how we nurture that relationship, moving beyond routine religion into genuine fellowship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Paul highlights several expressions of prayer, petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving; showing that believers are called to bring every concern before God while also praying for others. We are instructed to pray for leaders, communities, families, and those who do not yet know Christ. Prayer is not simply about presenting requests; it is about aligning our hearts with God’s will and participating in His work in the world.

“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.” – 1 Timothy 2:1

Using examples such as Hannah’s desperate prayer, Abraham’s intercession for Lot, and the early church waiting in prayer for the Holy Spirit, the sermon demonstrates how God responds when His people seek Him earnestly. Prayer invites God’s presence into our circumstances and allows Him to work in ways beyond what we can see or imagine.

The message concludes with a challenge for believers to make prayer a priority. Rather than treating prayer as an occasional response to crisis, Christians are called to cultivate a lifestyle of prayer, seeking God’s presence, praying with faith and gratitude, and trusting Him to transform lives through the power of His Spirit.
